104 London Debaters is a Toastmasters debate club in London for learning debating and improving your critical thinking skills. The mainstay of the club is our debate meetings every second and fourth Tuesday of each month (or as announced). Here you get to practice debating, either as part of a debate team that will have prepared to propose or oppose a motion or as an individual debate speaker in our mini-debate Table Topics (impromptu speeches) or in giving your opinion during Floor Contributions during the main debate. 104 London Debaters is a Toastmasters public speaking club with focus on debating.
As per the Toastmasters ethos, we offer a supportive and friendly environment, although the arguments are scrutinised thoroughly.
Through our VP Mentoring you may be able to be assigned a mentor from one of our more experienced members, who will try to help and support you in reaching your goals of learning debating and critical thinking. Mentoring is extremely useful for getting personal and individual feedback on your debating performance.
Debate teams usually have a coach; an experienced member who guides the team's preparations.
At our meetings we always have an insightful evaluation of the whole debate, to enable you to learn from what worked well and what can be done better next time.
In addition to debates, serious as well as humorous, we also run workshops on topics related to debating, such as on how to spot fallacies, how to prepare for a debate, how to summarise an argument, as well as on mentoring and many other topics.
We also meet socially, after each in-person debate meeting and at various times throughout the year.
After debates at our localities in Russel Square, we usually gather at the Queen's Larder pub, 3 minutes walk away.
If you are able to come to our in-person meetings, feel free to join us when we meet in Russel Square.
